Nancy Bowden

I was born in Ocala, Florida in 1950 and am a 5th generation Floridan. Both parents were blessed with creative and artistic abilities. My father was in the welding and steel business. Mother was a stay-at-home mom and was gifted in drawing and she painted a little. Her mother was also a very good artist. I remember a couple of art lessons as a child, but never really concentrated too much on painting until after high school. Pretty much self-taught, with a class here and there along as life progressed. Painting always took a back seat to family and work, but it was always a nagging presence pulling me back to the canvas. For the last 5 or so years, I have really devoted a more serious approach to my paintings. My focus is landscapes, waterscapes and portraits, and am traditional in my approach with oil paints. I work from photos that I take of local and surrounding landscapes, or work from photos that clients provide. Being a proud local, with respect and affection for my surroundings, I find inspiration all around and have a strong need to put that on canvas and to share that feeling with others.

Statement

I am FLO Grown, with a sense of pride for “my Florida”. My main focus is on landscapes and waterscapes of local and surrounding areas. I also have a profound interest in portraits and have found being drawn to do more in that area too. My work is realistic and traditional in my approach with my preferred medium being oil paints

Being a 5th generation Floridian, I have a deep respect and love for local scenes that conjure up memories of childhood and happy times that others can relate to also. Inspiration comes from nature itself and I’m always on the “lookout” for the perfect tree, the perfect reflection on water, the perfect field. Scenes constantly catch my eye, and my camera is always close at hand. I work from my photos as well as clients’ photos. My purpose is to share that sense of compassion and respect for our surroundings. If just one person stops to view and reflect on one of my paintings, then I feel I have succeeded in my work.
